Wrought Iron Wall Decor: Features and Advantages
By Alisa Davis
Wall decors are sometimes made from wrought iron. Wrought iron offers many options to choose from when looking for wall decors appropriate for the exterior and interior parts of the home. They come in different shapes, colors, sizes, and materials. One of the most durable materials for wall decors is wrought iron. Wrought iron is a type of iron, which includes refined metallic iron. It also contains one to three percent of slag (which mainly consists silicon). Slag is a by-product from the smelting process. Here are some features of wrought iron that make it an ideal material for metal wall plaques: 1. Sturdiness. Wrought iron is hard-wearing. As an integral metal used in everyday life, iron is made into different items like tools, cars, and buildings. Iron is the second most common element on the planet and the fourth most common in the crust of Earth. The human body contains about one-sixth ounce of iron. Iron is the basis of strong metallic alloys, which are used to manufacture wrought iron wall décor and metal wall plaques. 2. Flexibility. As wall decors, wrought iron has superior quality over cast iron. Cast iron contains more carbon, which makes it hard and brittle. Since wrought iron contains a much lower carbon content, it is more malleable and ideal for shaping and molding. Because this material is so flexible, it can be used to createwall decors of any shape and pattern, such as mirrors and wall grilles. Wrought iron pieces can be styled into traditional or contemporary wall decorations, as well as traditional art. 3. Timelessness. Wrought iron is ancient. According to history books, wrought iron was used as substitute for bronze by people in Asia Minor during the second century B.C. Tools and weapons made from wrought iron were found in many regions by the third century B.C.; namely: China, Mediterranean, and India. Over time, Europe was using cast iron to produce wrought iron. In the 1900’s, wrought iron was mainly manufactured for decorative purposes like metal wall plaques. 4. Resemblance to Wood. Due to the slag that wrought iron often contains, it has ‘grains’ that resemble actual grains of wood. When the wrought iron is bent to create a ‘carved’ object, you can see the wood-like ‘grains’ visibly. This characteristic is quite rare among metals; but it adds texture to the wrought iron when made into metal wall sculptures. Wrought iron is a long-lasting and prolific material that can be easily created to a wide range of wall decor designs. Due to its wood-like quality and texture, the metal wall plaques and metal wall sculptures made from wrought iron will always look interesting and appealing as wall art pieces.
