What to Consider When Choosing Stucco or Vinyl Siding
By Anna Young
If a water mark appears on your ceiling, the mark is probably going to be the least of your problems. Water marks are not that difficult to repair, however there is no point in repairing the ceiling until you find and repair the source of the leak. Fixing the water mark without repairing the source only means that the mark will come back again and it’s likely that the damage will get progressively worse. Leaks may be caused from damage on the roof; they can be caused by missing or damaged shingles, cracks or holes, or damage to flashing around vents or where a vertical wall meets the roofline. High wind can also drive rain under the roofing shingles or ice can form a dam at the edge of your roof that causes water to back up and run down the wall. Such weather related problems should be addressed as soon as possible. On the other hand, the cause of your leak may have nothing to do with your roof. There could be a leak in pipes in the walls or ceiling above the level where the water stain has appeared. Leaks can also result if the caulking is worn around a tub or shower stall. Once the source of your leak has been repaired, you can address the water damage on your ceiling. Take Stock of the Damage How you will treat the stain depends on great the damage is. Examine the stained area carefully; if the drywall is soft or crumbly, it must be cut out and replaced. Simply painting over damaged drywall will not make the stain or damage go away. Remove all traces of damaged drywall and replace with a new section; then tape the patched area, apply drywall compound to the seams, let dry and then prime and paint to match the ceiling. How to Treat Lightly Stained Areas If your water stain is faint, you may be able to reverse the staining with bleach and you won’t have to repaint the ceiling. Pour a small amount of bleach into a cup and use a clean rag or sponge, gently dabbing the affected area with the bleach until the stain disappears. Then let the bleached area dry completely and try touching it up with a piece of white chalk, rubbing the chalk sideways onto the stain. If your ceiling is not white, touch up the stain with paint that matches your ceiling color. Treating Heavy Stains If you’re not so lucky and your stain is heavy and highly visible, you will need to seal the stained area before you can touch it up with paint. The sealer is needed because heavy water stains can bleed through whatever paint you apply; a shellac primer or a stain blocking sealer will seal the surface so that the stain cannot bleed through your new layer of paint. Be sure that you have good ventilation in the room before you begin working; vacuum or lightly wipe the affected area with a clean dry rag to wipe away any dust or debris. Apply a coat of stain blocking primer to the entire area, painting beyond the edges of the stain. Refer to the primer label for drying times and let the area dry thoroughly before applying a coat of matching ceiling paint. Photo from Flickr - "Vinyl Siding" courtesy of editor . |
