The Latest Colors for Decorating Your Home
By Alisa Davis
Colors like mimosa yellow, moss green and rose pink are very contemporary colors, and they make a room instantly hip and trendy. Here are some of the latest color trends and ideas on how to incorporate them. Today’s Trends Metallics: Metallics can be used to add interest and a subtle sparkle to a room and it can be used on the walls or in furniture or accents. For a trendy and bold look in your room you can add oversized, gold accents to a large mirror frame, add a piece of gold trimmed furniture, or paint metallic finishes on chosen accessories. Or think beyond gold and choose cool colors like silver, white and arctic blue in your accessories. Grey: Very much ‘in’ this season, grey is also a wonderful neutral. So while you can add a layer of pale grey to your walls as a nice background neutral, you can also add accessories in the room in every shade of grey from rich charcoal to the coolest platinum. Retro: ‘Looking back’ seems to be a trend this year, which has added new life to retro colors like hot pink and bright blue. Of course you would not want to bathe a room in them, but they could make great accessories in a small bathroom with a neutral backdrop. Limit: By keeping your room a neutral color, you can simply choose one of this year’s trendy colors to define your space. For example, in a room that is decorated in shades of white and cream, the room may already have a lot of textured interest. So adding a single grouping of accents of chocolate brown will not upset the base palette of the room, and it makes the room look very modern. Natural: By keeping your room natural, you can use neutral colors, which are always in style, as the backdrop of your design. Then you can add pillows and accessories in black, eggplant and deep yellow for a trendy pop. Color Tips As you are adding color to your room it is important to balance it throughout the space. You can repeat colors around the room to add balance, and you can use a single piece of décor, like a rug, as your inspiration. This way all of the colors in the room relate back to the rug, and the rug is the element that ties the room together. Whenever you add color to a space you want to make sure that it is balanced throughout the space. You can use the decorating 60-30-10 guideline. This means that sixty percent of the room will be in the base, frequently neutral, color. Then thirty percent of the color in the room will be in a bolder or dominant color. Finally, ten percent of the color in the room will be the accent color. Photo from Flickr - "Vintage Living Room" courtesy of back_garage . |
