The Benefits of Double-Duty Dining Room Furniture

If you have a smaller home, designing rooms and choosing furniture that can do double duty is a great way to expand your living space without adding square feet. In a small dining room, you can keep the room feeling spacious while still being functional for your needs if you make some careful furniture selections. An Expanding Table
A table that can be expanded by adding multiple leaves is a wise choice for the dining room. If you only have to seat a family of four most of the time, why take up space with a table and chairs that seat eight or twelve? A good solution is an expandable table with six chairs; you can keep four chairs around the table and two against a wall so you’ll have some extra seating. You can also stash folding chairs away in a closet, basement or garage and bring them out when you need to seat 8, 10 or more. Purchase or make chair covers that can be tied with a bow in the back, and you’ll be able to make your impromptu seating look as good as your dining room chairs. Baker’s Rack & Bookcases
A bookcase or shelving unit, such as a baker’s rack, is a handy piece for a dining room. You can use it to hold cookbooks, serving pieces and silverware, linen or placemats tucked away in pretty baskets or decorative boxes. A baker’s rack that has a deeper main shelf is also convenient as a staging area whenever you are entertaining: You can use it as a place to hold dishes, cups and saucers for second courses, use it as a small buffet, or as a place to hold desserts and coffee. Some baker’s racks also include a wine rack. While a bookcase is not as deep as a baker’s rack, it is a great solution where floor space is limited. It can hold nearly as many items on the shelves and you can use the top shelf for a decorative floral and candle display. A Versatile Storage Bench
A storage bench adds a wealth of convenience and storage to any room of the house, and in a dining room, it can be pulled up the table for extra seating, while holding a myriad of linens, large serving pieces and utensils, napkin rings or trays under the lid. A very convenient use for a storage bench is to tuck away decorative accessories that you use for various holidays and changing seasons in the dining room. This keeps them conveniently at hand and it’s easy to swap out decorations at a moment’s notice. It also helps eliminate the need to store these items elsewhere in the home. You might think that a chest of drawers should be relegated to the bedroom, but it is an excellent stand-by piece for the dining room. Not only does it offer a great amount of storage in the drawers, you can use the top for serving space. Don’t worry about finding a chest of drawers that matches your dining room furniture; pick up one at a garage sale or discount shop and paint it in one of your accent colors. Then hang a wall mirror or piece of wall art above it, arrange some candles and flowers on top, and you have a beautiful and functional focal point for your dining room. |
