Striking Simplicity: A Dining Room in Black & White

By Anna Young

There is something universally appealing about a room designed in black and white. Its straightforward simplicity is easy to appreciate and easy to design as well. It leaves little room for error. Unlike more complicated design styles that can easily go wrong, with a black and white scheme there is less chance that an item will not coordinate and look out of place. A simple dining room design in black and white is nearly effortless, but is almost always striking and beautiful. Here are the characteristics that make this motif so popular and foolproof and a perfect choice for contemporary design.

Black and white is trendy and sophisticated. A black and white palette looks crisp and modern and is easy to pair with any other colors, pattern, textures and prints. Black and white is a great basis when you want to introduce a second style in the dining room without creating what may be perceived as a style faux pas: For example, you can have a modern black and white dining room and bring in a black console from the 1940s and it will totally work in the space.

The contrast of black and white and the continuity and repetition of the two colors makes it easy to add any accessories and wall decor, and you can freely mix patterns and prints with success. A black and white palette lets you embrace simplicity with sophistication. Black and white sets a great backdrop for adding any other colors, from bold choices to more serene hues. Any other color used in the room will clearly stand out as an accent. Patterns like stripes, paisleys and checks will work together and still provide interest, because the neutral backdrop of black and white works as a great unifier.

Black and white lets the streamlined shapes and lines of contemporary design truly shine. Contemporary design is all about bold contrast and strong shapes, from geometrics to the contrast of curves against straight lines. The contrast of black and white in color further emphasizes such modern lines and shapes; it is nearly impossible to overlook the shape of a black item against a white backdrop of visa versa.

Black and white lets you introduce a theme and works as well with traditional decors as with contemporary. Because black and white is essentially neutral, it works with any design style or other colors. For example, if you want to decorate with a French country theme, bring in a black table and ladder back chairs, black and white toile fabrics and traditional French colors like barn red or sunflower yellow for accents, and the room practically decorates itself. Or create a primitive country look with distressed black wood, muted mustard yellow and white. It’s easy to see that just because a dining room features a great deal of black and white, it does not have to embrace stark contemporary austerity that may feel uninviting.
