Step-by-Step Guide on Creating Greek or Roman Theme in the Bedroom

By Alisa Davis

The Greeks and the Romans should be sent many ‘thank-you’ notes for their major contributions to the present civilization. The Romans left us their coliseums, Roman pillars, and the Senate; while the Greeks bestowed to us their ‘democratic belief’, the ‘Father of Medicine’, and the Boolean logic (which helped on the advent of computers).

Very easily, you can create an ancient but classical aura of Greece or Rome inside your bedroom. You just have to use a Roman or Greek theme for the design.

Here are some easy-to-follow steps that will guide you on how to use this classic theme:

1. Choose the right shade of paint.

A particular shade of beige is needed; so you will have to buy three shades of light brown and glaze. Blend the three hues according to what shade you need. Look for these products at any hardware stores.

• Glaze (medium)
• Lightest shade of brown – Buy enough amount of paint for the whole room.
• Medium shade of brown – one to two shades darker
• Darkest shade of brown (1 quart)

2. Paint the entire room with the lightest shade of color brown.

Before painting, make sure the walls are clean and dry. Use a roller brush to create a smoother finish.

3. Apply the medium shade of brown.

On the ratio of 50:50; blend the glaze and paint with medium shade of brown. Mix thoroughly. Use a sponge to apply dabs of the glazed paint on the walls. Do not cover the entire walls so that the first coating will still be visible. To create a layered look, arrange your paint dabs in the asymmetrical pattern. This technique will create depth and texture so that it will complement any metal wall sculptures.

4. Add the wallpaper columns and the darkest shade of brown.

Using a fine-pointed brush, create lines (or veins) on the walls with the darkest shade of brown. Make sure not to overdue this. You need just enough veins to make the walls look like marble. Depending on the size of your walls, you may need just two or three veins for each. Dry the paint completely before adding the fake columns of wallpaper.

5. Use wooden flooring.

To create a perfect aura of Roman or Greek theme, the floor should be made of wood. But if this was not possible, spread an area rug made from natural fibers like jute or sisal. The area rug should match up well with the wall decorations.

6. The bed should match the surroundings and the owner.

For a female occupant, a canopy bed with light and white drapes is appropriate. Otherwise, any bed that has neutral colors or shaded lightly will do. You may paint a dark-colored bed with white or cream. Light-colored bed will match with the walls harmoniously.

7. Choose matching bed clothes.

You can use textured fabrics with fine stripes on the bed clothes. Neutral-colored with thin stripes will also be appropriate beddings.

8. Plaster pillars are perfect accessories.

The metal sculptures that are hanging on the walls are best complemented with ivy plants on plaster pillars.

9. The right window drapes will complete the picture.

There’s something magical with thin and lightweight drapes that willow with the softly blowing breeze.
