Small Bedroom Solutions: Creative Storage with Style
By Alisa Davis
When a bedroom is small storage can be a challenge. One small closet is not enough for most people and if there is not ample floor space for dressers or bureaus the room can get cluttered and messy in a hurry. Thankfully there are creative storage solutions that not only make the space more functional, they add style as well. Rearrange and Start with the Basics Any room can benefit from a good purge from time to time, but it is essential in a small bedroom that clutter is kept to a minimum; items that are no longer used should be stored elsewhere, donated, recycled or trashed. Keep in mind that furniture arrangement can make a big difference in how spacious a room appears and how well it functions. In a smaller bedroom, it may be best to arrange the bed closer to one wall instead of centered on a wall. This provides more useable space for a dresser or small chair on the empty wall and at the foot of the bed. Consider replacing the headboard with a sizeable piece of wrought iron wall decor or canvas wall art, which will look chic and save a few inches of precious space. Make the room appear more spacious by choosing lighter colors for the walls and paint the ceiling in the same light hue to give the illusion of more space overhead. Add to the illusion of space by placing a stylish framed wall mirror where it will catch and reflect natural light or where it will make the space seem deeper and larger. The wall opposite the entry is an ideal location for a space-enhancing mirror. Do Something Different! With a bed arranged closer to one wall instead of centered between two nightstands, you may be able to completely eliminate one night stand, thereby adding floor space. Night stands have relatively little storage anyway, and if you are using night stands just to hold bedside lamps, replace the lamps with wall mounted sconces or sleek and stylish adjustable wall lights. From chic modern lamps with drum shades to classic wrought iron, you're bound to find wall lamps that suit your style. If you'd rather not cut into a wall to run electrical wire shop online for sconces with cording that can be wired externally on the wall or via conduit. Replace the remaining nightstand with one that has a drawer and two or three lower shelves. This will give you room for storing items personal items discreetly in the drawer while books and decorative accents can be displayed on the open shelves. Choose a nightstand with an opening on the backside to accommodate telephone or answering machine wiring and eliminate the need to keep the phone on top of the nighstand, reducing clutter even more. Make the Most of Vertical Space Wall shelves and open ladder style units that fit flush against the wall will make the most of vertical space for storing clothing, books and accessories and displaying home decor or small sculpture. Use baskets on the shelves to corral sweaters, T-shirts, scarves, jewelry and other small items. Add a piece of wrought iron wall decor on the wall above the storage unit to add decorative flair. Or, install a piece of wrought iron behind open freestanding shelves to keep items from falling through the back while also adding style. Look Under the Bed Add a bed skirt and utilize space under the bed. Current season clothing can be stored in under-the-bed containers with lids. Jeans, sweaters, purses, and shoes are easy to store and access as needed from lidded containers. Out-of-season clothing or items that are seldom used will take up less space if stored in vacuum sealer style bags that remove excess air and reduce the amount of storage space needed.
