Reclaiming Used Furniture for Any Decor

By Anna Young

Whether you plan to showcase a piece of old furniture in a room or whether you are simply being thrifty or environmentally aware, there are many different ways that you can refresh and reuse a piece of furniture. With a little imagination and a quick trip through the attic, you may be surprised with possibilities that a used piece of furniture can offer.

Refacing Furniture with Fabric
Sometimes a piece of furniture is in perfect shape, but its fabric is simply ugly or outdated. Just by reupholstering the furniture you can take an unusable piece of furniture and not only make it serviceable, but you can also make it a key part of your room's decor. Sometimes the upholstering is simple enough to do yourself. For example, a chair may simply need to have its seat recovered, and with less than a yard of fabric, a screwdriver and a staple gun, you can make the transformation in minutes. You can take on bigger projects using instructions that you can find at your local library, bookstore or even online.

Remaking and Refurbishing
Sometimes a piece of furniture just needs a little paint to freshen it up. If the piece is otherwise sturdy and the finish is just in need of care, you can simply grab a paintbrush and brighten up the piece. While you may be hesitant to paint a newer piece of wooden furniture, sometimes it is easier to paint an older piece of furniture to highlight your decor and really brighten up a room. Often a piece of furniture actually looks better as a painted addition to your room than it would have if you had simply refurbished it to its original state. This is a good place to unleash your creative juices and create a really unique style statement.

Relocation Makes It New Again
People are creatures of habit, and it is all too easy to get locked into the idea that certain pieces of furniture can only exist in certain rooms of your house. But keep an open mind and look at other possibilities: For example, a small desk can be repainted and made into an adorable, little vanity. A lone chair from a discarded dining room set can make the perfect place to sit in a bedroom while putting on your shoes. An odd chair may also find a home in the foyer by the front door holding a basket of flowers. Storage benches are a great possibility in the foyer and they also work well in a child's bedroom to hold toys, or even in a large bathroom to hold towels.

With just a little touch up painting, complete refinishing or reupholstering, you can take just about any old, unused piece of furniture and bring it back to life. These pieces of furniture are great additions that add a one of a kind touch to any room's decor.

My house is filled with old stuff that I have re-worked to make it me. I just don't think the new stuff has the charm that the old does. I know it does not have the memories.
Nice website... BTW

Hi Cindy --- I couldn't agree more, and there is something very satisfying about breathing new life into a used up piece of furniture. Thanks for reading.
