Quick and Easy Plaster Finishes for your Walls

By Anna Young

Plaster walls add a superior finish to a room that imparts more drama and texture than you can achieve with ordinary painted drywall. Although professional plaster artisans are hard to find and expensive to employ, there are ways to add the high-end look of plaster to your home as a DIY project. Here are some techniques that will let you add the finished look of plaster to any room in your home.

A Venetian Plaster Finish
If you’ve ever been to Venice, you’ve very likely been swept away by the beauty of authentic aged Venetian plaster walls that add depth and unparallel beauty to the walls of ancient palaces, cathedrals and romantic canal residences. A real Venetian plaster finish can achieve by a skilled professional, but there is a way to recreate the look with a faux Venetian plaster technique. Standard drywall compound can be combined with sharp quartz sand to create a product that can be applied with a trowel to your walls to mimic the look of Venetian plaster. Perfect your technique on scrap drywall and compare your results to photos of actual Venetian plaster before trying the technique on your walls. After the finish is applied and has time to dry completely, prime and paint the walls as desired.

Creating Textured Plaster Walls
You can create any number of textured effects for your walls by applying ordinary textured drywall compound with a textured roller, a trowel, toothed wall float, paint roller, drywall knife or brush. You can create literally any look that you can imagine. In addition to creating a unique look for your walls, textured plaster helps to disguise any cracks, holes or damage that might exist on your walls. While you still want to fill any holes or cracks first, imperfections on a textured wall will be much less noticeable than they would be on a smooth wall. Again, you should practice your technique first before applying it to the wall; allow your textured compound to thoroughly dry before priming and painting.

A Faux Stucco Finish
Stucco is a very appealing look in nearly any style home and is especially appealing with southwestern and hacienda decor. A faux stucco treatment can be used on any wall that is in good condition; make sure that your walls are clean and dry and free of dust before you begin. Use a half-circle motion to apply drywall compound with a drywall trowel, applying about one-quarter inch of compound to the wall. Let it dry and then trowel on a second layer using the same motion so that layers and circles of stucco overlap and add dimension. Refer to manufacturer’s recommendations for drying times and be sure that the walls are thoroughly dry before applying primer and paint. If compound is the least bit wet your primer and paint will end up peeling, resulting in an unsightly mess that is difficult to correct.

I think that I would rather trust this type of work to professionals. I don't think I have the talent for this kinda thing.

Hi James --- That's certainly a fair assessment, and experience has taught me that it's much cheaper to hire a professional to do the job right the first time than it is to have them come in and fix my botched attempt!

Thank you for sharing these helpful tips on wall finishing, Anna. Practicing on some scrap wallboard is critical for the amateur.
Best wishes.

Hi Frederick --- Practicing on the scrapboard is critical, because it lets you assess if you have what it takes to get the job done. Thanks for reading.
