Paint: The Perfect Basement Floor Covering
By Anna Young
There is something fun about decorating a basement space. Perhaps because it is usually a little separated from the rest of the house, its design can be a little more daring. Often when decorating a basement, there is not a generous budget, and when this is the case consider painting the basement floor instead of buying laminate or carpeting. When painting a basement floor, it can be covered with a single color, but that is not a particularly fun way to start building a unique and daring room. Consider painting a fun design on the basement floor! Here are some simple ideas that anyone can pull off successfully. Prepare the Surface The most important part of painting is preparing the surface. If the surface is not properly prepared, the paint can begin to chip and flake completely wrecking the overall design of the floor. First make sure that there is no moisture problem in the basement. If there is, get it corrected before beginning to apply paint. Also patch any holes or uneven spots in the floor so that there is a nice, smooth surface to paint. Scrape away any loose paint and thoroughly clean the surface of the floor. Vacuum up any loose debris and wash the entire surface with a TSP wash to make sure there is no grimy residue on the floor. Then rinse the entire area thoroughly and let it completely dry. Cover the entire surface of the floor with a good quality primer, which will help the paint properly adhere to the surface while promoting a professional looking finish. Follow any directions on the primer to make sure to get the best adhesion possible. Map Out a Design Next, it is time to plan out the design. While some designs may be difficult to paint and require a good deal of technical skill, there are also many designs that do not require a great deal of technical talent to create. For example, adding borders to the floor can be done simply by outlining the area with painter's tape. After painting the floor a solid color and letting it dry, add the painter's tape and simply fill in the area with whatever color paint is desired. A striped design can also be created with painter's tape. Stripes can be added in contrasting colors, or they can be rendered in a tone on tone design with a flat and gloss finish. Using stencils to add a design to the floor is also a wonderful way to add a lot of pattern to the floor without needing a lot of technical painting skill. A homeowner who is a little more artistic may want to brave a freehand design on the floor by first drawing it with a soft pencil. Other techniques like sponge or rag painting are also great ways to add texture and interest to the floor's surface. Have some fun by painting a carpet on the floor, which can be a simple design or a very complicated rendering of a Persian carpet complete with a fringed edge. Tips for Painting Really any type of pattern will work on the floor, so a homeowner should select a design that they will enjoy painting. When working on the floor, wear clean socks to keep the area free of any marks or debris. Let painted areas dry completely before adding another color. Once the floor is finished, consider sealing it with a water based polyurethane varnish to keep it looking new. Once the floor is completed, let it thoroughly dry and cure for a few days before replacing furnishings. |
