Online Shopping for Paintings: What you Need to Know
By Alyssa Davis
Buying paintings and artworks can sometimes be nerve racking and stressful. You may be bombarded with so many choices that you can easily get confused and bewildered. Aside from that, you don’t want to pay more for a painting than its worth and it’s disheartening to learn that what you thought was a valuable original work of art is a fraud. Furthermore, going from one gallery to another can take a lot of time and energy. Because of this, it is fortunate for art collectors that paintings are now being sold online. Yes, the hottest marketplace of the modern decade has now made available precious paintings and wall decorations that used to be only found in art stores and galleries. Of course, just like any shopping activity, buying paintings online has its own list of tips and techniques that you should know about so you do not lose your way. Here are some excellent pointers to remember: 1. Rely only on reputable online galleries. Not all online stores and galleries can be trusted so you must find one that you can trust. One way to do that is to ask recommendations from friends and family who have tried buying their art collection in the Internet. Another way is to check the physical address of the store to see if it is a legitimate supplier of paintings. Moreover, you can also read customer’s reviews. Obviously, you should not rely only on the reviews that are posted in the website of the store you intend to buy from because most sites only publish positive comments. What you should do is to check out other people’s blogs and judge for yourself based on their review. 2. Shop around. Do not buy from the first online store that you find because there are many discount oil paintings sites the Internet. Not browsing through the other online stores will limit your choices and may end up causing you to spend more than necessary. 3. It may be cheaper to go direct. If you have a specific artist in mind, try typing his name on a search engine and see if he has his own website. Paintings sold on the artist’s website can be cheaper since online galleries mark up their prices for commission. 4. Read policies of the website. While the terms and conditions may be tedious to read, it is highly recommended that you do to ensure that you are undertaking a safe transaction with an online store. You do not want to encounter a problem just because you failed to read about policies, terms and conditions of the store. Shopping for paintings online is easy and convenient. But it’s important to protect yourself and your identity when making any type of purchase online. Photo from Flickr - "Instant-d'été-Casol-Art-wallpaper " courtesy of Mickael Casol. |
