Modern Wall Sculpture Art and the Great Sculptors Behind
By Alisa Davis
How can you say when a sculpture is modern? When is the right time to safely consider that it is the start of a ‘modern’ era? People are mostly confused with the world of art. The term ‘modern’ is typically used to refer the styles, the artworks, and the artists—that were popularized in the past decade or century. While today’s art is considered contemporary art by most people, after a while these works of art may be thought-out as ‘classic’—as classic as the sculptors from Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque period. Here are 5 of the most renowned ‘modern’ sculptors: 1. Constantin Brancusi (1876-1957). He was a Romanian sculptor but he lived in France. Brancusi was the main force to refine sculpture as an art form, in the 19th century. One of his great creations, ‘Ecorche’ (1902), which he created after attending different art schools, was still used by Bucharest’s medical school as a model. Auguste Rodin influenced Brancusi’s work. He believed that there’s a force within a sculpture which helps create its surface. Brancusi was fond of using a minimalist approach in all his attempts to represent sculptures in most basic forms. 2. Naum Gabo (1890-1977). Gabo was born in Russia but later became an American. In World War I, Gabo developed a ‘stereometric method’ of sculpting while living in Norway. His first sculptures were Cubist. He used celluloid and sheet metal; and other interesting materials like glass, wire, and plastic. He aimed to create an impression of movement in all his art pieces. 3. Ivan Mestrovic (1883-1962). He worked as a shepherd before he became known as a Croatian-American sculpture. Auguste Rodin, a Greek classic sculpture, influenced most of Mestrovic’s serious works. The materials he commonly used were wood, marble, and bronze. His usual subjects were: • Biblical scenes • Churches • Yugoslav folklore • Yugoslav history 4. Pablo Picasso (1881-1973). He began as a young painter and, after a short while, his artistic skills became a world-renowned success. 5. Auguste Rodin (1840-1917)
