Mix and Match Wallpaper Ideas
By Anna Young
Decorators often prefer wallpaper over paint because wallpaper offers them a greater number of patterns to play around with. Since wallpaper is widely available in a huge array of styles, patterns, and colors, it is a cinch to find lots of stylish choices that can be mixed and matched together. The decorating ideas that follow will help you to consider some style possibilities that you may not have thought of before. Combining Patterns and Stripes One great option that can be used alongside patterned wallpaper to create an interesting design effect is striped wallpaper. For instance, choosing a pin-striped wallpaper to apply to the walls along the bottom section, and then adding floral printed wallpaper to the upper walls can be a great way to bring together the look of your room. Add a strip of matching wallpaper border or chair railing to disguise where the two patterns intersect. You can also create a visually stunning effect using bold stripes that are combined with solid paper or a paper that has a subtle pattern to it. Striped wallpaper on one solitary wall within the room with the other walls being done in another pattern or even a solid color can be a very aesthetically appealing technique. You might also choose to select wallpaper patterns that have no common colors, such as selecting a peach and green floral wallpaper to combine with wallpaper with pinstripes in cream and brown. Playing Off Other Patterns Within the Same Space Selecting wallpaper in a pattern that is a mirror of other patterns within the space is a wonderful way to bring a decorator touch to your room. Select wallpaper in patterns that coordinate with whatever patterns are found in rugs, upholstery, pillows, and so on within your room. To avoid monotony, use this technique subtly. For instance, fleur-de-lis patterned wallpaper will draw some focus to the pillow on your couch that displays a larger fleur-de-lis. It is also possible to mirror the architectural features of the room with the wallpaper that you choose. As an example, use a brick look wallpaper on the wall that faces a brick fireplace to draw emphasis to the brick. Non-Conventional Ways to Combine Patterns You can often get surprising results by playing with various pattern combinations when installing wallpaper. It is invariably a good idea to take some color swatches of the colors used within your space with you when you shop for wallpaper. Compare these swatches to wallpaper samples to find coordinating patterns. By holding sample pages up to one another, you can get a good idea of how the various patterns would look when paired together. You will soon find that mixing and matching patterned wallpaper is a wonderful way to get a designer look within your space that is much more appealing than boring, painted walls.
