Make the Master Bedroom More Inviting: How to Decorate with Flowers
By Alisa Davis
Floral arrangements and displays, whether fresh or faux, can make any style bedroom more inviting. The key is to pick blooms that match the style of the room. Grasses, orchids, and calla lilies fit right in with a contemporary design and old fashioned roses, gladiolas and zinnias can bring cheer to a traditional, country or casually inspired room. Here are few suggestions for incorporating floral arrangements and displays in master bedroom decor. Displaying Flowers Creatively Think outside the box – or the vase – when displaying flowers. Anything from a teacup, to a perfume container, or colored glass vessels that ties into your decor can add a unique touch to a nightstand or dresser. Dramatic metal wall vases and pocket vases can be used to display fresh flowers by inserting a smaller glass vessel into the wall vase, or arrange a tumbling cascade of faux vines and blooms. Faux flowers and dried flowers can also be used to decorate walls, open soffits or the tops of tall furniture. Arrange dried flowers in a vintage mug on a windowsill or let them peak over the edge of a tall armoire. Tuck vines and seasonal blooms into a grapevine wreath for a personalized wall decor to hang above a bed, on a door or beside a window. Lay a few faux blooms on a mirrored tray with a grouping of scented candles to adorn the top of a table or nightstand. Enjoy the atmosphere after dark with the soft glow of fragrant candlelight. Fresh Flowers for Any Budget If you have a garden with roses, perennial flowers or annuals, combine them with abandon to create interesting flower arrangements. Don’t overlook beautiful blooms from flowering shrubs, such as hydrangea, weigela or spirea. Cut flowers after the morning dew has dried and keep them fresh by adding a pinch of sugar and a few drops of bleach to lukewarm water in the vase. Always strip the leaves off the stems to reduce the formation of bacteria and keep the stems fresh and supple. Cut roses with a sharp pruner scissors on a diagonal; bring them inside and cut them again under lukewarm water in a laundry tub or sink. Cutting them underwater reduces the buildup of air bubbles in the stem and they will last longer. If you don’t have a garden, your local grocery store or farmers’ market is a great source for fresh flowers at affordable prices. Flower Arranging Tips and Tricks Save money and enjoy your flowers too by creating your own arrangements. Make flower arranging easy by using flower frogs. Flower frogs are made of glass or metal and have tiny pointed needles or depressions that effortlessly hold blooms upright. They come in many different sizes to fit your favorite vases or vessels. When arranging flowers you can get a professional look by varying the height of your blooms. If you cut a stem too short, give back some of it’s height by inserting it into a drinking straw. Greenery such as ferns and baby’s breath can be used in the center of the arrangement, propping up other blooms. Also choose different shaped flower heads for interest; spike shaped flowers like lavender and salvia, as well as plumes from large grasses, are the perfect foil for daisies, black eye Susan, coneflowers or roses. Use short blooms around the edges of your arrangement and let some loose or vining varieties tumble over the edge for a hint of romance.
