Kitchen Cabinetry: Easy and Creative Ways to Restore Old Cabinets

By Alisa Davis

Your kitchen can display the most beautiful appliances, wall decor, dinnerware and accessories on the market, but if your cabinets are outdated and worn the entire kitchen will look old-fashioned and shabby, but not necessarily chic. Thankfully, you don’t need to go to the expense of replacing kitchen cabinetry to give a kitchen a fresh new look. If your cabinets are in good condition it will be more cost effective to give them a cosmetic makeover. Try the following fixes to bring cabinetry up to the level of the rest of the kitchen and the entire home.

Easy Fixes for Dull or Scratched Surfaces

The first step in making wood cabinets look new is to give them a thorough cleaning with oil soap and water followed with an application of natural orange or lemon oil. In many cases, this will restore the sheen and luster of tired wood surfaces. If your cabinets have lots of small scratches, a wood restoration product, such as ‘Restore-a-Finish’™ can make your cabinets look like new again. ‘Restore-a-Finish’™ is available in many different colors, from oak to walnut and mahogany, to match any wood surface. Apply it with 0000 grade steel wool, working in the direction of the grain. Read all label directions and precautions before beginning. Larger scratches can be filled with wood putty, sanded lightly and touched up with matching stain.

Another way to quickly repair the surface of cabinets is to paint them. Remove the doors, then wash and lightly sand all surfaces. It’s easiest to set the doors on a sawhorse or work surface before painting them; use a roller on the doors and cabinet bases to achieve a smooth finish. Try shades of white or soothing taupe or sand for a clean sophisticated look that is versatile enough to work with any style decor.

Add Impact with New and Stylish Knobs

Old-fashioned knobs and drawer pulls add age to any kitchen. While new cabinet hardware is not necessarily inexpensive, it is much cheaper than replacing cabinetry. Home improvement stores carry an expansive array of hardware at a variety of prices. Glass knobs, wrought iron, hammered metal, porcelain and stainless steel knobs, bin pulls and handles are just a few of the options you’ll find. Elaborately wrought thematic pulls, such as lizards or grape clusters, are often among the most expensive styles. If a very expensive knob appeals to you, considering using it in a high visibility area, such as the cabinets above the kitchen sink, and use a more affordable coordinating knob or pull for lower doors or drawers.

Wood Embellishments and Carvings

Give plain cabinet doors and drawers an entirely new twist by embellishing them with flat-backed carvings that are ready to paint or stain as desired. Wood carvings and bandings will add dimension and depth to your drawers and cabinet doors. Choose from very simple carvings that add raised edges or go with very elaborate carvings that will make your cabinets look like they were created by a master wood craftsman.
