How to Take Care of your Valuable Art Collection

By Alyssa Davis

Your art collection may be one of your largest investments, so it is important that you take good care of your collection. In order to ensure that your precious artworks and wall arts stay in mint condition, follow these
practical pointers on how to care for them:

1. Examine your art collection regularly. Check if there are any signs of deterioration, which may require immediate attention and treatment. For example, you may see that there is a split on the tacking edge on the canvas of your stretched painting. For this problem, you may need to replace the lining.

It can also happen that one of your paintings have small holes in the stretcher, which means there may be insects in it. Do not wait until the insects bore into the painting before you do something about it. Get a new stretcher for your painting.

How about the canvas? The fit of the canvas on a stretcher should not be wavy, buckling or too loose. What you should do is to tap in the key to improve the tension. But be careful not to overdo this because too much pressure can result in a turned over edge.

2. Lift paintings properly. When carrying your paintings, it is better to lift them from the outer edges instead of holding them by the top edge of the frame.

3. Clean your artworks carefully. For paintings and canvas wall art, you can remove dust and lint with a soft cloth or a natural brush with soft bristles. Be gentle when doing this, otherwise you might damage the painting or cause for it to get flaky and loose. If ever you find blots or stains on a painting, take it immediately to a professional art restorer. Do not attempt to restore the painting yourself.

4. Do not hang paintings near heat sources. Constant
exposure to heat sources such as a heater or a fireplace can result in soot and heat; also avoid placing a painting directly in front of an air conditioning vent. Avoid placing your painting in rooms with halogen or fluorescent bulbs because these emit ultraviolet rays that can fade the painting.

5. Store your wall art and paintings in safe places. It is not recommended to store your paintings in attics or basements because they are subject to extreme fluctuations in temperature and humidity, and they lack efficient ventilation. Use pads in between paintings when stacking them and be sure that wire and hooks do not damage adjacent paintings.

6. Carefully wrap, cushion and insulate your paintings from moisture, humidity and temperature during transport. Avoid transporting your paintings when the weather is extremely hot, humid or cold.

7. Choose a safe spot for your painting. Do not place your painting in any area of your home where it could be knocked off the wall, like near the stairs or the walkway.

8. Keep your hands off. Do not allow your hands or other’s hands to touch the painting because the moisture and oil in your fingers can ruin a painting.

With these simple but helpful pointers, you can ensure that your paintings stay in excellent condition.
