How to Decorate with That ‘70’s Look

By Alisa Davis

If you’re old enough to remember the 1970s, you can probably recall many design trends that were the ‘cheesy’ hallmarks of that era, like multi-colored shag carpet, bright orange plastic furniture, and suburban kitchens decked out in harvest gold and avocado green. But from an artistic standpoint, the 70’s took the pop art influence of the 1960’s to a new level, with an emphasis on natural color and textures juxtaposed against bold patterns and geometric shapes. Design trends from the 1970s can be reinterpreted and updated with a modern eye, making them a unique way to revive modern interiors.

Accenting with a Nod to the 70’s
The key to successfully incorporating a 70’s undertone in your décor is to use it in small accentuating doses. Using too much of it increases the risk that your interior will look dated instead of uniquely hip.

• When thinking of trademark 70’s colors, remember the decorative buzzword of the times: ‘Earth Tones’. Dark stained woods, leafy green, pumpkin yellow and harvest gold were used ad nauseam. Use these tones in a modern interior as a cheeky accent, toss a pumpkin colored chenille pillow on an espresso colored couch. Use deep leafy green as an accent in a monochromatic space, repeating it in a dramatic glass vase, a supporting color in a modern abstract painting, and a frame on a series of black and white photographs.

• Do the same with nubby 70’s-influence texture. No, this doesn’t mean you should resurrect your macramé hanging plant holders! But a table runner or set of placemats with a hand-tied knotted surface can add color and texture under modern place settings. Add color and texture to the walls adjacent to the tables with vintage 70’s patterned fabrics simply displayed in solid colored frames. A shag area rug in muted tones brings a modern twist to this much-aligned carpet style.

• Rattan and wicker pieces were all the rage in the 70’s due to their connection with nature. Pick and choose your accents carefully from wicker plant stands, open shelving units, wall mirrors and wall shelves that can add a little hint of the 70’s to a bathroom or kitchen.

• Curvilinear shapes were another predominate design element of the 1970’s and this particular influence can look very apropos in a modern interior and provide balance against a preponderance of sharp right angles. Use simple rounded shapes in chair backs, wall mirrors, sculpture or patterns in fabrics and wall paper.

• The use of glass, metal and chrome was considered very modern in the 70’s and authentic pieces can be incorporated into a modern dеcor. A chrome and clear glass side table or coffee table echoes similar elements of clean, modern design. A 70’s style clear Lucite rolling tea cart makes an interesting accent piece in the dining room.
Use the colors, textures, and furnishings of the 1970’s as condiments to spice up typical modern decorative fare; an open mind and light touch will keep the look fresh, enlightened and unexpected.
