How to Decorate Plain Ideas Plaster Pedestals for an Elegant Touch
By Alisa Davis
Like many home accessories, pedestals run the gamut for very expensive to very affordable. High-priced granite, marble or elaborately carved wood may be out of your price range. But don’t despair! You can add an elegant touch to a corner or entry with a plaster pedestal. It’s easy to add color and personal embellishment to a plaster pedestal to make a perfect finishing touch for room of your home. Try these ideas to add just the right amount of color and detail to a plain plaster pedestal and use it to display plants, flower arrangements, statuary or art, or topiary to make it an accessory that is uniquely you. Add Subtle Color with Sponge Painting While plaster pedestals are typically sold in white or antique white, you can coordinate them with any color scheme by sponge painting the pillars in two complementary colors. It is recommended that you use latex craft paint, and choose two colors that are separated only by a few shades for a harmonious and understated effect, such as a lighter and deeper tone of the same color. Colors that contrast greatly will be harder to blend and could result in a pillar that looks harsh or gaudy. Begin by sponging on the lighter color first, completely covering the pillar. Then use the sponge to add random dabs of the darker color, softening and blending the edges of the two colors together. If you’re new to sponge painting, or if you’re not sure if you will like the final result, try out the colors and your technique of a piece of cardstock or poster board first. Embellish in Gold Accents Add a little glitz to a pedestal with rub-on gold accent paint. Use a light hand with gold accents, because they can quickly overwhelm if they are overdone. Try a little on the swirled designs, but do not completely cover every the pedestal in gold. Add realism by varying the intensity of the gold accents, allowing it to sweep over the raised areas of the design and skip over the nooks and crannies. Follow label directions on the accent paint to add lustrous highlights to the pillar, giving it glamorous high-end appeal for just a few dollars. Awash in Subtle Color Color-coordinate a pillar with any room or with accent colors by adding a subtle color wash to a plain plaster pillar. Make a thin wash of perfectly subdued color by watering down latex paint and applying it with a soft bristle craft brush. A thinned down version of any color will look richer than full-strength latex paint and will provide a subliminal link to other deeper colors in the room of the same hue. Highlight with Iridescent Gloss If you can use a very light touch, you may try adding a coating of latex craft gloss laced with fine iridescent glitter. First, paint the pillar first as desired and let the paint dry thoroughly. Use the glitter gloss to add a tiny bit of embellishment to a simple part of the pillar’s design. You may consider adding glitter to the center of a circle or flower, or to the straight edge of a footed molding. A pillar that is topped with a figurine, statue or vase full of flower can add a great deal of interest to a corner or entryway. Try your hand at a little creative embellishment to make a budget-friendly pillar a perfectly coordinated accessory. Photo from Flickr - "Pedestal" courtesy of thesilusgrok. |
