Furnishing with Futons and Other Funky Finds

By Anna Young

If you have always wanted to have a room that is a little unconventional and just fun, then you may want to consider decorating with futons and other fun furnishings to incorporate a new and unique look in your home. Whether your style is retro, modern or shabby chic, you can find a funky piece of furniture that will fit in perfectly.

Retro Rebound
If you want to design a room that has a lot of retro style, turn to colors that are saturated like bold yellow, green or orange. Funky furniture styles that work for this decorating style are molded plastic tables and chairs, beanbag chairs and futons. Add a shag carpet and vinyl flooring, and your retro style room is almost complete. If you do not have the right furniture to pull off a retro look, do not worry, because thrift stores are still chock full of cast off furniture rendered in a retro style. In the event that you do not find what you are looking for at a thrift store, you can find retro inspired furniture online too.

Modern Makeover
If you are fashioning a room that is modern, then you will want to include a stark contrast like black and white and you will want to incorporate shiny metal surfaces or accents like chrome. A modern room is the perfect spot for futons with sleek and simple lines. Then bring in glass top coffee tables in black lacquer or chrome frames, and you may also want to include angular ottomans that can be used for feet or as an extra seat. A lidded ottoman can also double as handy storage space in the room. Add a tray to the top of your ottoman, and it can also serve as a coffee table. Pairing a modern styled futon with a boxy ottoman offers the perfect aesthetic for a modern room, and the storage capability of the boxy ottoman helps keep the clean lines of a modern space in tact by offering a handy storage space to for your belongings. Whether you use your ottoman as a footrest or a coffee table, you room will be both attractive and comfortable.

Not Too Shabby!
The shabby chic style is homey and personal. It is comprised of well worn furniture that feels settled in and comfortable. When you are decorating a room in this style, furniture is generally pretty easy to find, because you can incorporate used furnishings into your room design. Incorporating a futon into this style is just as easy, because the traditional wooden frame futon fits the shabby chic style perfectly. If you do not want a natural wood frame on your futon, you can certainly add a layer of crackle paint to your futon and custom tailor it for the room. Pair it with an old trunk to use as a coffee table, which can also double as storage. Add a brightly painted wooden stool, which you can use as a stool or a side table. Be creative as you arrange your furniture and remember that there are no set rules for their use. So visit your local garage and yard sales, and see what you can find. Give old pieces of furniture new uses, and remember to make it personal for the perfect shabby chic style.
