Family Room Shelving Ideas
By Anna Young
In nearly any room in the home, shelving can be a great way to display and store your “stuff”. This is particularly true in the family room. The effective implementation of shelving in the family room can help keep your family room organized, neat and close to your fingertips for easy access. So no matter whether you want to install shelving to store your kid’s toys or to display your collection of movie memorabilia, you will quickly discover that shelving can add to the functionality and beauty of this often used room in the home. The ideas that follow will help you to determine which type of shelving is the best idea for your family room. Bookcases Basic bookcases can often be the best type of shelving in the family room and they are readily available in nearly any home store or big box retailer. Perhaps your room has built-in bookcases or you wish to purchase free-standing bookcase shelving. Either way, bookcases can be a great way to store things in the family room. In family rooms where floor space is at a minimum, you can opt for taller full-height shelves in lieu of shorter versions. In actuality, you can have as much as twice the space with a full-height bookcase. You can use the full-height shelf in a variety of ways, including displaying collectibles, reference books, children’s books and more. If your family room doubles as a television room, then you might also think about storing DVDs or VHS movies on bookcases. Shorter bookcases can be positioned against the back of a couch or positioned in a way to create a child’s reading area within the space. Shelves on the Wall Wall shelving is a popular option in the family room, typically because they don’t take up a lot of floor space. This is perfect for family rooms that are short on square footage to begin with. Think about mounting a couple of long shelves on your wall behind the couch in order to create a decorative display. You can also use small shelves to showcase individual art items or your collectible knick-knacks. It is important that you mount your wall shelving properly, particularly if shelving is going to be used for holding heavy objects. Always use proper screws and anchors for wall shelving so that you don’t have any accidents. Display things like books, collectibles, and small objects on your wall shelving. You can also utilize the wall shelf to display fragile items at a height that is safely away from small kids or pets. Shelving that is Built-In And finally, another option for shelving for your family room is built-in shelving. Many people are fortunate enough to have built-in shelves in their family room, like bookcase shelves on the side of the fireplace, or recessed shelving or corner shelving. The recessed shelving options that are seen in many homes can be particularly space-conscious, as they are built right into the wall and do not take up any floor space whatsoever. Built-in shelving in the family room can be very aesthetically pleasing and can be used to hold art objects and sculptures safely.
