Dens That Dare to Function
By Alisa Davis
If you home has a den, it may be overlooked when it comes to decorating. All too often a den just ends up being a rather dark utilitarian room that seems to collect all of the unwanted furniture from the rest of the house. Take a minute to add a little style to your den by making it into an attractive and functioning room. The Den as a Home Office You may decide to use your den as a home office and create a space that encourages you to focus on the task at hand. Using a bright neutral color on the walls helps to instantly open the space. Then go in and get rid of all of the clutter in the room. If it is not part of the office get rid of it. Now that you can see what is staying in the room, you can design your storage space. Make sure to allow plenty of easy storage to keep your space neat in the days to come. However, while you are clearing out the clutter in your space, make sure to keep a few items that let your personality sing in the room. For example, a favorite piece of artwork, some family photos or your favorite plants will go a long way towards keeping your space personal. The Den as a Lounge If you have always wanted a room for entertaining, consider making your den into an entertainment lounge. This is just a room for you to enjoy with your friends. Add some comfortable seating and fun artwork on the walls. Make sure to have plenty of surfaces available to rest snacks and drinks. Add some oversized floor pillows for more intimate soirees. Paint your walls deep, rich tones, which will look great with ambient lighting or candlelight. If you have a fireplace in the room, of course it would make the perfect focal point; otherwise, you can display a grouping of your favorite photos or artwork. As you are choosing lighting for your room, make sure to have good overall lighting in the room, and add a dimmer switch so that you can change the lighting to suit your mood. Family Entertainment Center If your home does not have a family room, then this is a great use for your den. You can set the room up for your whole family to enjoy. Add a wide screen television, foosball table or video game console. Use an old coffee table and floor pillows to create a game or puzzle table. Then let your whole family weigh in on your decor and color choices for the room. Start with a neutral background in your room, and then add some bold fabric or even an accent wall. Try to include a little bit of every family member in the room, so that everyone has a real sense of ownership in the room and everyone will enjoy time spent there together.
