Decorative Ideas to go with Terra Cotta Floors

By Anna Young

The initial thing that most folks notice when they walk into a home is the flooring. And while homeowners tend to pay a lot of attention to their walls and furnishings, very few really understand just how much impact the flooring can have on their overall decorative scheme. One of the more challenging flooring types is found more typically in the Southwest – terra cotta floors. This type of flooring is usually found in locations where hot climates are the norm. The coolness of the terra cotta tiles plays a big part in controlling the temperature of the inside of the home. Although terra cotta plays a functional and important practical purpose in that way, it also has a lot of charm and personality. Determining how to complement that charm and personality, however, can be difficult. The tips below will help!

Importance of Undertone

It is important to determine the undertone of your terra cotta tile flooring before choosing a color palette for your space. If your tiles have a warm undertone, then you should select colors that have a warm undertone as well. This will work to keep the room feeling cohesive and harmonious. And yet similarly, if the terra cotta floors feature cool undertones, then you will not want to paint your walls in browns, warm reds, or other warm colors. Terra cotta floors vary greatly and it is altogether possible that you will have tiles that have both warm and cool undertones. In this instance, choose colors from whichever undertone is the most dominant, or go for neutral colors in order to diffuse the mix of warm and cool.

Colors

Bright, bold colors are rarely a good choice with terra cotta tiling. These colors not only don’t match your tile, but they will also cause a sense of discord or confusion in your space. In lieu of bright and bold colors, opt instead for colors that are natural and soft. The colors of the desert landscape can be an inspiring look for coordinating your tiles, as the color of the floor is typically a reflection of this anyway. Light brown, cream, and white are all good matches for your terra cotta floors, since they allow the floor’s natural beauty to shine through while giving you a neutral-styled backdrop for any artwork that you choose for the space.

Art

Artwork that is chosen for the space should be chosen while paying mind to the terra cotta flooring. Not all artwork will match a space with such floors, and the floors can actually overwhelm the decor quite rapidly. Opt for metal wall art pieces that are reflective of the natural beauty of the desert and that are alive with natural elements. From framed prints to fabric crafted wall art and metal wall art sculptures, you will quickly find that there are a ton of possibilities for you to consider accentuating your terra cotta floors.

Terra cotta is never more pronounced than when you use it in your home’s floors. Terra cotta requires cautious planning for the rest of your decor and calls for more attention to decorative details. Allow the natural beauty of the terra cotta to shine through by utilizing pieces that accentuate the terra cotta rather than overwhelm it.
