Creative Decor Solutions: Flat Screen Savvy
By Alisa Davis
Decorating the wall space above and adjacent to a large modern television screen can present its share of decorating dilemmas. For starters, you don’t want to obstruct anyone’s view of the screen. You also don’t want to compete with whatever is being viewed onscreen. While smaller screens can be discreetly hidden in an armoire, large flat screen TVs designed to be hung on the wall can easily overshadow a space. Here are some potential solutions to this modern day dilemma. Solution #1 – Don’t Compete If you have a large flat screen television in a room, there is no way that it will not dominate the space, so why not make it part of the room’s ambiance and dеcor. Try painting the wall behind the TV in a dramatic color then add low-profile metal or wood wall art to add stylistic flair. For example, if your room has a modern Asian vibe, the wall could be painted in deep crimson. Accent along side or above the TV with black metal art of Asian calligraphy; choose open-style art that allows the wall to show through and be sure to pick artwork that is in scale to the amount of available wall space. You don’t want it so large that it seems to crowd the wall. Use the same technique in any style of room by varying the wall color and the artwork: A more traditional take could be to use wrought iron wall dеcor whereas a country, cottage or casual atmosphere might be the perfect setting for wood wall art. One caveat: avoid candle or electric wall sconces that will reflect on the surface of the TV and interfere with optimal viewing. Solution #2 – Create a Media Wall Make the TV and electronic media the focal point of your room. Low slung consoles that fit below the screen may be all you need in a smaller room. In a large room, low-profile shelves that run along side the screen and even above it can be used for display, storing CDs and DVDs or simply as modern geometric molding around the TV. The lower shelves can be deep enough to accommodate any storage needs while the areas around the screen should be lower in profile so that they don’t obstruct the screen. You can find pre-made media storage cabinets in retail stores, from catalogs or online or you can have one custom made. Solution #3 – Frame it Up Do something unexpected and build a decorative frame for your TV, treating it like a piece of art. This is a great way to make a modern TV fit into a room that is less modern in style, such as a cottage or country living space or a funky eclectic room. Create an elaborate gilded frame by cutting and mitering decorative wall trim cut to size. Pre cut your pieces, then stain or paint as desired before mounting them on the wall. Choose elegant dental trim for a traditional room or use rough-hewn rustic logs to frame a TV in a cabin inspired space. An easy treatment for any style is to pick a fabric that coordinates with your room and wrap it around Styrofoam core panels cut to fit as a frame around the TV. Wrap each section, staple the excess fabric on back and cut away excess; then mount your ‘frame’ on the wall around the TV. Photo from Flickr - "Flat screen" courtesy of Lance Catedrals .
