Creating a Minimalist, Zen-Like Media Room
By Anna Young
A media room is often filled with movies and games chock full of high-energy action and adventure. If the room is decorated in a wild, over-the-top color and theme, the room can feel a bit chaotic and overpowering. However, if a minimalist Zen decor is used, the boldness of the media can be offset by serenity that makes the room more comfortable and less edgy. If you prefer to leave your action on the screen but have a relaxing decor, incorporate a few of these ideas to bring calming Zen into your media room. Elements of Nature Zen is a minimalist decorative style that focuses on natural elements. An effortless way to bring Zen into the room is through wood furniture and accents. A beautiful wood grain media cabinet, side tables and bookcases to house movies and games is a great way to add a natural feel. Wood picture frames, wall art, beverage coasters, trim and furniture accents are other great ideas. Green plants - on shelves and tables and as floor plants - are an excellent way to maintain a natural feeling in the room. Calming & Clutter Free The whole concept of Zen is to pare a room down to bare essentials so that the space is open, streamlined and clutter free. Therefore, efficient organization and storage is essential. Since this is a media room, it is not required that the television be hidden from view; after all it is the main purpose of the room. However, to keep in tune with Zen style, hang a wall mounted flat screen TV above a simple wood media console that can contain all related components. The unit should have doors to hide electronic clutter and any open shelving can be fitted with matching woven baskets to hold miscellaneous odds and ends. Larger baskets with similar texture and color can be set under tables to hold pillows, throws and other items that will add comfort to your viewing experience. Keep wiring hidden and use wireless speakers so no wiring trails are visible. A Serene Color Palette A Zen color palette includes neutral calming colors like cream and taupe or charcoal; accents colors can be nature inspired, such as shades of brown, muted greens and serene shades like plum or wine. Choose colors that have a warm undertone and go for matte finishes instead of highly polished or reflective surfaces. Furnishings in wood, leather and simple woven upholsteries are good choices. Wall art and accents should be kept to a minimum and designed with simple line and form. Recessed lighting is a perfect way to add overhead lighting that is unobtrusive and it should be installed on a dimmer switch so that lighting can be dialed up or down via remote control as needed. Side lamps on tables or floor lamps also add versatility to the room, but choose styles that are streamlined and simple. Wall lights and sconces, also on dimmer switches, are a good way to add a little visual drama and also keep a small amount of light in the room for safety during movie viewing.
