Create Extra Kitchen Space: Three Easy Projects & More

By Alisa Davis

Your kitchen sink base cabinet can be a black hole of wasted space. The false kitchen drawer fronts, the backside of the cabinet door and the space under the sink are all places where you can add a little extra storage space that might help you keep kitchen clutter under control. Here are three easy projects to help you make the most of this often under-utilized space.

1. Install false drawer tip-out trays
Everyone knows the frustration of not being able to find little items when you need them. Ironically, they are the same items that seem to create clutter in the kitchen. A tip-out tray kit can be the solution. Shop your favorite home improvement store for a tip-out tray kit that will allow you to turn the false drawer fronts on your sink base cabinet into space that will corral small items like rubber bands, twist-ties, scissors, sponges, scouring pads, pens, pencils and other small items. While a tip-out tray is not as spacious as a drawer, it will give you a little extra space just where you need it.
In addition to a kit, you will need an electric drill with a small bit, flat head and Phillips screwdrivers, measuring tape, marking pencil and safety goggles.
Make sure that you read through all instructions before beginning and before drilling holes. Keep in mind that you will need to keep hinges for your tip-out trays flush with the front of cabinet frame, so they should be installed approximately one-eighth inch from the front edge of the cabinet.

2. Install an under-sink sliding shelf
Don’t put away your tools yet from project #1. Use a piece of plywood and a set of drawer glides to install a sliding shelf under your sink.
Measure the space under one side of the cabinet. Following the instructions that come with your drawer glides, measure and install the sleeves for the glides on the floor of the cabinet. Cut the plywood to size and screw the drawer glides to the sides of the plywood. Line up the glides and slide the shelf into place.
Your sliding shelf is a great place to store your trash bin, recycling bin or a plastic bin to hold dish soap, cleansers and cleaning supplies.

3. Out of Sight Hang Up
Store plastic bags, rubber gloves, sponges or dish towels on the inside of your sink base cabinet door. Simply glue round magnets to the back of ordinary clothespins, let the glue dry and then glue the magnets to the back side of the door. Pin up your items on the clothespins and keep them out of site.

Here are a few more tips for adding style and space to your kitchen. Keep the presentation stylish by incorporating a few decorative items with the practical ones.

• A wall shelf with hooks or pegs can hold utensils below and canisters or mixing bowls above. Make sure that shelves are securely mounted into wall studs or with mollies.

• Install a series of shelves vertically on a blank wall to store cookbooks, small appliances, or recipe boxes and folios. Use wicker baskets to store supplies or odds and ends. Set up a portable bill paying system with a pretty fabric colored or tin box to hold incoming bills that you can review on a weekly basis. Equip it with pen, pencil, notepad, small calendar, calculator and stamps.

• Add a vertical magazine holder to the inside of your pantry door to organize your favorite cooking magazines.

A little creativity can go a long way in turning wasted kitchen space into useable space that keeps you organized and clutter free.
