Contemporary Decor for the Music Lover

By Alisa Davis

When you love music enough to dedicate a room of your home as a music room or media center it’s only fitting that you decorate it with musical accents. From contemporary wall art and sculpture to metal wall hangings, you’ll find the perfect accents to make your music room sing.

Contemporary Metal Wall Hangings

Make a focal point on a large expanse of wall with a large piece of contemporary metal wall art that will add color and texture. Musical notes, scores, staffs and instruments can highlight a space over a piano or intermixed with collected guitars hung on a wall. Paint the wall in a deeper color and use spot lights on dimmers to accent the wall arrangement. Modern candle wall lanterns with frosted or textured glass can add diffused light that will contribute dimension and depth. Add modern style throughout the room with sleek table lamps, leather furniture and a low-slung console that can house all your electronic media with flair.

Create a Musical Note Wall Mural

Create a unique musical note wall mural in a home theater or media room, music studio or any space that is used for entertaining. A fine-tip high-quality sable brush can be used to fill in notes and letters drawn first in pencil. Copy a score, lyrics, movie titles, or the names of a favorite musical artist on a wall with black paint. Juxtaposed against a shade of white, the composition will have real impact. Accessorize with framed posters of favorite movies, actors or musical artists, as well as album covers or sheet music. From a retro Hollywood theme to a rock n’ roll mood, the possibilities are endless.

Make a Musical Collage

Personalize any musically themed space with a collage of favorite artists or album covers. Compact disk covers, newspaper and magazine photos, and publicity photos can be used cut out and randomly overlapped on a large stretch canvas and attached with glue. When finished, use decoupage medium to seal the collage and produce a smooth matte finish. Make a really cool retro collage by collecting black and white lithograph prints and posters of musical artists from the 1950s, 60s or 70s. Intersperse cut pieces of colored scrap book paper or sheet music with the photos if desired. Lithograph photos are fairly inexpensive and can be found at resale stores and from musical memorabilia source, both online and retail.

Mount your finished collage on the wall or on an easel for a unique piece of wall art. Smaller metal wall hangings in coordinated styles and colors can fill out the wall and turn the collage into a focal point.

Art and Accessories

Carry the theme from the walls to table tops with table art sculpture in a musical genre that accents your style. Contemporary sculpture or retro pieces will help pull the look together. Then add items that will enhance your comfort and enjoyment, such as throw pillows, floor cushions, ottomans and table lamps in colors and styles that echo your color choices throughout the room.
