Constructing a Den that Supports your Style
By Anna Young
Many dens can look dark and uninviting, and as such they are generally not the most welcoming room in your home. When remodeling your den, think about keeping it light and making it a room where you can gather with friends or simply relax after a long day. You may also want to outfit it as a home office so you can get some work done. Perfect for a Home Office If you are planning to use your den as a home office, make it work for you so that it is easy for you to work in it. Make sure that your surroundings are comfortable, and the first step to doing this is to remove any clutter that you may have in the space. Then find a neutral color that you like and use it for the background of your room. Selecting a light color will keep the room feeling open and comfortable. Then you can add some bright accents to the room to give it a little personality. Since your home office reflects you, it is a great place to have some of your personal, favorite things displayed. For example, you may want to arrange a grouping of your favorite photographs on one of the walls. You may also want to bring in some of your favorite plants in the room. Finally, make sure that the room has adequate lighting. Entertainment Central If instead of a home office, you would like your den to be a room for entertaining your friends, you can make some stylish and lively design choices. Make sure that you include ample seating and a comfortable style in your den turned lounge. Regardless of the style that you choose, such as Asian, Moroccan, rustic or even retro, make sure that your den is comfortable and inviting. You can find many different themes and ideas for your den in magazines, on TV or on the internet. If your den has a fireplace, it makes a fantastic focal point for the room. Otherwise you can create your own focal point in the room using an art collection, a piece of antique furniture or simply a bold colored wall. Add comfortable couches, floor pillows and places to set your drinks, and you have the perfect space for entertaining. You may also want to include a dimmer switch in the room for when you have more intimate gatherings. Family Room Fun Another great use for the den is that of an entertainment center for the entire family. Add a big screen TV, a gaming station or even a low tech Foosball table, and you have a family room that everyone can enjoy. If your room is larger, then you can add different sections for gaming, TV viewing, reading, etc. Let your family help pick colors and even have input on the furniture style. Look for ways to make the decor reflect your family and their interests. Then add the proper lighting to the room, and you have a place to enjoy a movie or a book as you relax with your entire family.
