Combining Function and Style in the Home Office

Working at home is becoming more and more prevalent, but just because you work from home does not mean that you have to sacrifice style. Your home office need not look like an office cubicle. With a few ingenious organization and decorating tips, you can convert your home office space into a stylish and comfortable place where you will enjoy working. Adding Storage While an overloaded desktop may be what appeals to some folks, it does not leave a lot of room for actually doing work. So instead of always pushing mounds of paperwork and other objects to the side so that you can work, why not invest in overhead storage that will help you get organized? Adjustable shelving on brackets is a good choice for the home office and it will allow you to find what you’re looking for fast. A set of shelves that span the length of your desk are ideal. You can paint or stain these shelves to coordinate with your existing desk and other office furniture. Coordinating Colors You will find a rainbow of different styles and colors when it comes to purchasing office supplies and containers for storing things in the home office. Items like files, file boxes, and storage boxes can be bought that coordinate with other decor in the home office, or you can decorate your own. A good way to coordinate colors in the home office is to choose an item – like your favorite chair, or an accent color in a favored iron scroll wall art, and then build upon that color. Adding color to the home office allows it to feel more inviting, and makes you want to be in the space. Repurposed Storage Solutions Repurposing items that you have around your home or that you buy from flea markets, yard sales, or antique stores can be a great way to add stylish storage to your desktop. Choose a vintage jewelry box to hold rubber bands, pushpins, and other small items. A short vase can be ideal for a pencil cup. There are infinite possibilities for dressing up your desktop with repurposed items when you tap into your creativity. Document Organization Do you prefer letter trays or filing cabinets for organizing your documents? If you prefer strictly to organize, then you likely will want to go for filing cabinets and hanging file folder systems. If you want to know where everything is and have it at your fingertips, then go for letter trays. The stackable letter try system can be purchased in colorful designs and styles that will really add a pop of color to your day. Labeling each try with a colorful sticker will help you take organization a bit further. Seek out other ways to decorate the home office space in functional and stylish ways, even if what you call your home office is just a tiny corner that you have set aside in the den to work. Bring in your favorite home decor accents and favorite colors to the area. Simple, personal touches will make the space feel less like a stuffy office building for the nine-to-five grind and more like a cheerful area of your home where you happen to make a living!
