Cheerful Country Kitchen: Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries!
By Alisa Davis
A country kitchen and a bowl of cherries are as natural as, well, cherry pie! A cheerful red and white color scheme that is accented with a cherry motif will make any kitchen a nostalgic and inviting space full of country comfort. The key to decorating in any theme is to use balanced approach: Cherry theme accessories and accents will work in harmony with the color scheme and a mix of patterns set against a country style kitchen. While you will find cherry decorative accessories in every imaginable item for the kitchen, the best approach is to pick your accents carefully and not overdo the theme. Browse through these ideas and ‘cherry pick’ the options that appeal the most to you. The Backdrop Obviously, a cherry theme is going to incorporate a lot of red in the color mix. The great thing about red is that it will work with any style and color of cabinetry, from painted white to blue or green and any natural shades of wood, from deep chestnuts to light oak. A neutral color for the walls, such as ivory, taupe or shades of white, or a complementary color like light blue, will allow the red accents to pop. Developing the Theme: Options, Directions and Accessories • When choosing your accents, everything does not have to incorporate a cherry pattern or motif. For example, red and white check curtains or seat cushions will be right at home with cherry themes introduced in dish towels, rugs, dishware, lamps, aprons and mixing bowls. Or, go the other direction, and use cherry themes in your curtains and chair pads, but go with stripes, checks or solids elsewhere. • Mix up the pattern and colors with striped towels or a cherry theme apron that features stripes in yellow, blue, ecru and red and a large solid pocket with a cherry design. • Bring in vintage items such as cherry theme dishtowels or table covers from the 1950s to add a retro feel to your kitchen. Display your folded dishtowels or scarves in a glass fronted cabinet by draping them from a shelf so that the pattern is visible through the glass. • Bring in classic country elements such as red and white enamelware or dinnerware in classic red/white or blue/white spatterware for contrast and authenticity. Add a free standing country cupboard or spice shelf with mesh wire doors and display your enamelware topped off with wooden or artificial cherries. • Add a primitive flavor with framed prints, a braided rug, seat cushions or pillows in a Shaker tree of life theme depicting a simple cherry tree. • Decorative options for the walls include mini and standard size plates with a cherry theme, framed paintings or prints, metal wall art, wood or resin wall plaques and tin ware, wreaths, and baskets. Counters and cabinets may display dinnerware, cooking utensils and flatware, dish towels, paper towel holders, hot pads, canisters, mixing bowls, flower vases, counter lamps and glassware that can incorporate the cherry theme or accent your color scheme. A don’t forget a cherry theme bowl for the center of the kitchen table. Pick the accents that add your personal touches to country style, whether you choose vintage, retro, primitive or just cheery cherry fun!
