Budget Decorating: Updating a Room with Paint

By Alisa Davis

You do not need someone to tell you that the color of a room has an impact on how it makes you feel. Of course walking into a bright red room is going to affect you very differently than walking into a pale, sea foam green room. While vibrant colors incite energy, placid colors create serenity.

How you combine colors also has a huge effect on people. If you take a color like icy blue, it may feel cold and uninviting standing by itself, but if you juxtapose it against a rich, warm chocolate brown, all of the sudden it welcomes you into the room.

Whenever you decide to update a room with paint, consider how your room looks now, and then think about how you want it to look when you are done. You may want to add a little drama to a room that is all neutrals. You may want to tone down a room that is simply too loud. You may want to add some elegance to a plain space, or you may want to make a cavernous space feel more intimate. Sometimes, a little paint can go a long way towards changing the look and feel of a space.

Painting the Walls
If you want to bring a room to life, you can add warm, vibrant hues. Think of adding a red accent wall in your living room to bring up the energy level and stimulate conversation. Combine it with shades of brown on the rest of the walls for a warm contrast. In your bedroom use a light blue color for your walls and combine it with warm, earth tones and greens to create a calming and relaxing space. In your dining room, you can use neutral shades to exude elegance, and with a tone on tone color scheme, you can play with texture and pattern to create a lovely and interesting space.

Painting the Edges
If you do not want to paint your entire room, you can completely update the look of any room by just changing the color of the trim. By using a light contrasting color on your trim, you highlight the details of the room, and give the room a crisp, tailored look. When you use a dark contrasting color on the walls it usually makes a room look classic or traditional. When you simply blend your trim in with the walls by painting it the same color as the wall, you move attention away from the walls and onto the furnishings in the room.

You can also change the look of your room by changing the color of your ceiling. While a white ceiling will make your room look taller, painting the ceiling the same color as the walls, keeps the room more intimate. The darker the ceiling the lower it will feel, so keep in mind the height of your room before you get too creative.

Painting the Contents
You can also use paint to change the look of your room without ever touching a wall. Simply paint your furniture to create a whole new room. Color unites and color divides. You can make furniture with different styles feel cohesive by painting them the same color. You can also give furniture a vintage feel by applying a faux paint technique, or you may choose to showcase a single piece of furniture by painting it in your room’s accent color.
