Big Design Ideas that Work for Smaller Budgets

By Anna Young

Especially in today's economy, it's important to find ways to get the most from a small budget. Additionally, if you are like most people, you're constantly on the lookout for ways to live a more environmentally friendly lifestyle. The need for budget-friendly and eco-friendly decorating solutions has prompted many designers to come up with innovative solutions. By simply using some of these decorating solutions, you'll be able to get a lot of design "bang" for your small budget "buck." Here are a few quick and easy ways to follow the lead of some of the top designers when making the most of your decorating budget.

Keep Your Decorating Plans Simple

When making decorating decisions, the top designers and experts always recommend keeping things simple and easy. It can be especially important to follow this advice when you are trying to decorate on a budget. Take care to always make the best decisions possible, whether you are selecting flooring, paint, furniture or accessories. Even if you have to choose a more budget-friendly item, that doesn't mean you won't be able to replace it later when you have a bit more money to spend. Many times you can even sell your existing item to help raise money for its replacement. Although it might require a bit of searching in order to find budget-friendly paint options that are also eco-friendly, it can be done with a bit of perseverance and patience.

Set Realistic Goals

Although you might really wish you could decorate your home with the finest name brands, in most cases a less expensive option will work just as well. When decorating on a budget, you'll often have to make the decision to go with less expensive products. Although they might not be your first choice, there are ways to use less expensive decorating accessories creatively to create stunning results. You should never feel pressured to choose the same trendy name brands that are frequently featured on television shows or in magazines. Instead, choose attractive and practical items that are a good fit for your budget. By setting realistic decorating goals for yourself, you'll be happier and achieve better results.

Curb Your Spending When Over Budget

If you happen to go a bit over your budget when decorating your home, find a way to curb your spending. In some cases, it might be tempting to just give up and grab your credit card when you realize you've already overspent your budget. However, spending even more money is not the solution. Instead, look for ways that you can minimize costs for the rest of your project. By doing so, you might just find that you'll still be able to finish your decorating project under-budget. After all, it won't do you a bit of good to decorate your home beautifully if you find that you can no longer afford your mortgage payments.

Start a Home Renovation Savings Account

There are always going to be those times when expensive items such as refrigerators and water heaters break without any advance notice. When you have to replace expensive items unexpectedly, it can put a lot of strain on your budget. Instead of worrying about these situations, start a savings account that is specifically earmarked for home renovations, repairs and decorating. You'll worry far less if you know you are prepared for unexpected home emergencies. You might also be surprised how much money you'll save by not using your credit card to make these kinds of unexpected purchases.
