Bathroom Decorating: The Cat’s Meow

Cat lovers take note – there are many ways to decorate your bathroom in a way that honors your feline fancy. Even if cat theme bathroom accessories were easy to find, why use them when you can accent a bathroom in a more stylish and personalized way that is a tasteful expression of your love for cats? Whether you love big wild cats or purring domesticated varieties, here are a few suggestions for adding a kitty cat inflection to a bathroom. As with any theme, subtlety goes a long way. Let a favorite well-chosen accessory suggest the colors and style choices for bathroom décor. Wild Thing A beautiful bathroom can be built around an exquisite wild cat print. Choose a limited edition autographed print by a favorite artist of wild cats. It doesn’t matter if your choice is a realistic rendition or an abstract one; the important thing is that you love your chosen piece of art. Use the colors in the print and mat to influence your color choices. Perhaps there are gorgeous shades of cinnamon, dark brown, cream and blue in the print. You can repeat these hues in a shower curtain with an abstract pattern. Or go really wild and choose faux leopard or tiger prints. Towels and throw rugs can be a solid accent of the colors in your shower curtain. Countertop accessories in rich tortoise finishes or bamboo will keep the wild theme alive throughout the bathroom space. Domesticated and Sophisticated Take exceptional close-up pictures of your own house cats or purchase photos on line and use them as a basis for your bathroom décor. Choose four or six 5x7 photos, depending on the amount of space on your focal wall. Frame them impeccably with uniform mats and frames that will enlarge the finished photo to an 8x10, and arrange them in a grid on the wall. Let the cats dictate the color scheme. A sophisticated palette of black and brown will complement many kitty photos. A serene checkerboard style print in black and brown would be an elegant choice for a shower curtain and repeat deep shades of chocolate, espresso or light brown to coordinate throughout the bathroom. Thoroughly Modern Kitty If your tastes lean toward the contemporary, choose a bold color scheme of black and white with red accents. This color scheme will complement the white fixtures of the bath and if your tiles are classic black and white, this modern whimsical bathroom will delight you. Choose or make modern black on white silhouettes of cats either with paper cut outs or wooden cat cutouts from the craft store. Paint the wood cutouts black, mount them on white foam board and finish with a black frame. Black and white stripes or checks can adorn windows and the shower or tub. Add accents of red here and there in countertop accessories and in modern piping on curtains, towels or a chair cushion to add a little punch. Black cat theme text or figure stenciling on white walls can add interest wherever needed on the walls.
