Art Deco Style Offers a Sleek Retro Twist to Any Room
By Alisa Davis
At its peak in the 1920’s and 1930’s Art Deco takes its form from mathematical and geometric shapes. Beginning with French designers and drawing inspiration from art forms throughout the world, the movement really blossomed after the end of World War I. Eclectic yet opulent the style hearkens back to an early embrace of the machine age. Technology and lavish excess combined to create a style that offered a sleek, modern look. Viewed today as retro this jazzy art form has endured and still offers its signature style to many modern spaces. Neutral Backdrops To recreate the Art Deco allure, first form a base for the room in a neutral palette with hues of beige, off-white and neutral white. To enhance the feeling of the Art Deco style, stencil borders in geometric, zigzag and cubic forms. Rag rolling or stippling can be used to paint the border, or for a less labor intensive effort use wallpaper with geometric shapes. Then add accessories to the room in clean, bold colors to finish off the look. Floors should be kept in pale neutral tones, or for a bolder geometric selection alternating black and white tile forming a checkerboard pattern is a popular option. In a large room rugs can help define areas, and depending on the floor selection area rugs can be in bold colors, graphic patterns and even a decadent animal hide. Sleek Furniture The furniture found in an Art Deco room is modern with a clean, streamlined silhouette. Generally surfaces are smooth and shiny. Favorite materials included black, heavily lacquered wood, steel, chrome and glass. Along with sleek lines, other geometric shapes such as round side tables and rectangular sideboards were very popular. Any upholstered furniture such as chairs or couches are again geometric, but their lines are softened with rounded corners. Fabrics are generally lush chenille, leather or velour. Diffused Lighting Materials of the modern machine age like steel, chrome and glass are popular materials for lighting fixtures in an Art Deco design. One of the most identifiable pieces of Art Deco style, the lighting fixtures offer strong geometric shapes and muted light from frosted glass fan shapes and colored globes. Just as in fashion dressing a lamp was a lavish affair. Lampshades are frequently bedecked with tassels and fringes. While the Art Deco style is modern and sleek, it also incorporates an organic quality. For example while most lighting is very modern and angular, another popular lighting fixture was a sculpture of a woman holding a glowing globe. Bold Accessories The accessories in an Art Deco room are rich bright colors like purple, lavender, green and orange. Black is also included for drama. Large glass vases and bowls and heavy bronze sculptures add to the opulent look and feel of an Art Deco inspired room. Clean, beveled edged mirrors with a curved top and sleek, shiny picture frames also add to the style. Since Art Deco incorporates the richness of many different cultures in its design, frequently its art depicts tribal themes, African or South American collections and rustic handmade ornaments. Finish off the room with a lavish palm, and voila, you have an Art Deco inspired room. Photo from Flickr - "Le Grand café art nouveau à Moulins" courtesy of dalberas . |
