Affordable Window Treatments for the Master Bedroom
By Alisa Davis
It's easier and more affordable than you may think to create beautiful and stylish window treatments for a master bedroom without the expense of an interior decorator or specialty stylist. The key is to trade high-ticket accessories for budget stand-ins that look just as fashionable at a fraction of the price. Wall Vases or Scarf Valance Holders? Scarf valances add a touch of elegance to any window and can be used as a simple treatment over shades or blinds. To add softness to the window at a budget price, mount affordable sheer panels over the blinds or shades with an affordable tension rod that can be stretched right inside the window frame. The scarf valance can be draped over a café style rod hung above the window. For a dressier look, consider scarf valance holders to add another dimension to the window treatment. You'll find scarf valance holders made of resin, wrought iron or plaster at a variety of prices. From a discount or home improvement store, scarf valance holders are much more affordable that those at a drapery or window treatment specialty store. You will need, however, two or three scarf valance holders per window and if you are adding window treatments to several windows, the cost can quickly add up. Stylish metal wall vases will add much of the same dimension and grace to a window as scarf valance holders, but generally come at a more affordable price. Wall metal vases come in so many styles and colors - from rubbed bronze to painted or hammered styles; it will be easy to find a version that complements your room. Use three wall vases, one centered above the top of the window and two at either side of the frame and drape a long valance behind the vases, letting it gracefully cascade around the window. If desired, trailing vines of greenery or flowers can be swaged from the wall pockets as well, or arranged with floral foam and allowed to tumble out of the wall pockets. Wall pockets can also be used in lieu of holdbacks to hold lightweight fabrics in place. Vintage Scarf Valances and Thrifty Holdbacks If you have vintage or lace table runners, scarves or small tablecloths on hand, turn them into unique valances for your windows. Start as suggested above with sheers over blinds or shades and mount a café style curtain rod above the window. Swag lace or vintage runners from the rod or arrange a small square tablecloth in triangular fashion, letting the corners meet in the middle. If you don't have vintage fabric pieces on hand, try garage sales and resale shops as thrifty sources of style. Tea-staining is an easy way to match disparate lace pieces and create timeless appeal. Give Solid-Colored Panels a Shot of Style Solid colored budget panels are about as affordable as it gets, but many people find them boring and void of any style factor. To give them more appeal, start by buying panels that are wide enough to give the treatment a full and opulent look. Go for a longer panel as well - about 18 inches longer than the distance from the top of the window to the floor. This will allow the panels to 'puddle' on the floor, adding richness. Add embellishment to the panels to personalize and add style that would come at a hefty price if bought ready made. From beads, to shells, button or lengths of fringe, a trip down the notions aisle of a sewing store will inspire you. Photo from Flickr - "Master Bedroom" courtesy of cliff1066. |
