Adding Style to a Door with Ceramic Tile
By Anna Young
Ceramic tile is one of the most versatile decorating products available to homeowners. It can be found in virtually any shape, size, and color, and in a variety of textures and patterns. Ceramic tile is a wonderful choice for kitchen or bathroom flooring and backsplashes, but it can also be used for purely decorative purposes. Here are some ideas for bringing unique style to doors using ceramic tile. Choosing Tile for a Door When choosing tile to decorate a door, of course you want to choose a color, style and pattern that coordinates with the surrounding decor, but it is also important to choose a tile that will “fit” the door itself. Consider where you want to use tile on the door to determine what tile is compatible in shape and size. You may wish to tile a border around the door or around inset panels, or you may decide to tile a decorative strip at the bottom or top of the door. Measure the width and length of the area to be tiled and choose a tile that won’t require a great deal of cutting or piecing. In fact, if you can plan out your design without any cut tiles at all, the overall effect will be more appealing. Accenting an Exterior Door Decorative flair and curb appeal can be created by using ceramic tile as a decorative accent on an exterior door. Tile can be used on the bottom of a door like a kick plate; if your door has one or more panes of glass, tiles can be used to surround the glass window. Numbered tiles could also be used on a visible section of the door to proclaim your house number with style. Accenting Cabinet Doors You can transform the look of kitchen cabinets with ceramic tile; tiling works nicely on recessed center panels because the raised section of the door will “frame” the tile. You could also opt to tile the border edges of the doors and leave the recessed center as it is. Be sure that the hinges and hardware on your cabinets are strong enough to support the extra weight of the tile, however, before you begin: if necessary, upgrade your hinges with a heavier duty variety. Four-inch and one-inch mosaic tiles are a good fit for most cabinet doors and you can create your own unique design or pattern with mosaics. Interior Accents You can also use tile to accent interior doors in your home to add color and pattern, especially if you have multi-panel doors that offer a recessed or raised area where tiles can be used as accents. Think beyond squares and blocks when designing your tile layout and remember that a little tile can go a long way. For example, three tiles set on a diagonal down the center of a pantry door can give it a colorful appeal; choose themed tiles for a little charm or whimsy. Or add tile all around the door trim to add architectural interest. Photo credit to pedrosimoes7 . |
