Accenting a Baby’s Room with Mirrored Walls

By Anna Young

When you are decorating a nursery, you want to add elements to the room that stimulate the baby's senses. While most parents think of painting, adding stencil designs and decals to the baby's walls, most parents never think to add a mirrored wall to a nursery. Not only is a wall of mirrors a great way to make the room feel larger, but it also adds instant stimulation for a growing baby. However, if you choose to add a mirror to the nursery it is of paramount importance that it be properly installed, so that it is a safe addition to the room.

Measuring the Area
To add a mirror to the wall of a nursery, begin by measuring the area on the wall that you wish to cover. You can cover an entire wall, the top half of a wall or any other portion of the wall that you wish. After ensuring that your measurements are accurate, calculate the number of mirrored tiles required to cover the area.

Many Types of Mirrors
When you are applying a mirror to your wall you have two basic options. You can buy a solid sheet of mirrored glass and have it mounted to the wall, or you can buy mirrored tiles that can also be hung directly on the wall. While the tiles are easier to maneuver, they take longer to install, but if you are inexperienced working with glass or if you are working alone, then the tiles are probably your best bet.

Leveling the Mirror
To mount a solid sheet of mirrored glass, you will first need to plan where you want to hang it. Then mark a level line on your wall at one of the edges and snap a chalk line to use as a guide. Use a level to make sure that your lines are straight and level. Then cover the back of the mirror with a thick layer of mastic and have a helper assist as you press the mirror into place. It will take the mastic a few minutes to set, so press firmly across the entire surface to ensure proper adhesion.

If you are installing mirrored tiles, you can go about installing them several different ways. You can measure and snap your chalk line to the bottom edge of the mirror tiles. Then install the mounting brackets and mount the tiles. Move up the wall one row at a time until your wall is covered. You can also install the tile with mastic or you can use mirror hanging tape. Any one of these options will work to secure the mirror tiles to your wall. After you have covered the wall, the room will instantly seem larger and brighter.

Mostly Mirrors
If you like the idea of a mirrored wall much better than actually having a mirrored wall, you can always go in a little different direction and make a mirror collage on the wall. Find wall mirrors in a selection of sizes and shapes, and cover a wall with them. In a little girl's nursery you can top each mirror with a ribbon after securing the mirror to the wall. The mirrors will look like they are being held by a single, satin ribbon for a beautiful overall effect. You can choose mirrors in modern frames, natural wood frames or vintage frames, and you can mix and match in any way that works for your nursery. It may be a little more expensive to hang mirrors rather than cover the wall in mirror tiles, but the effect is stunning.

A mirrored wall in the nursery not only brings a lot of light into the room, but it visually enhances the size of the room as well. If you are handling a large piece of mirrored glass make sure that you know the proper way to handle it to avoid injury. Regardless of the type of mirror that you decide to hang in the nursery, you can be certain that it will go a long way towards making a bright and cheery nursery for baby.

What a wonderful idea to add mirrors to a babies room a whole wall full of them that would be so nice.

No one would ever be alone.
