A Classic Approach for Decorating a Living Room in Nautical Style
By Alisa Davis
Whether your home is at the beach or far inland, a nautical style has appeal because it reminds us of a carefree vacation-oriented lifestyle. The key to creating a classic nautical look is to use restraint; there are so many nautical themed accessories on the market that failing to edit carefully can result in a look that is overdone and unappealing. Here are the basic tenets you need to keep your nautical look stylish, classic and genuinely appropriate. Nautical Colors and Materials Of course, the classic approach to nautical color involves blue and white. But the shade of blue that is chosen can result in deep bold contrast – navy blue and white. Or you can choose a softer palette of pale or cadet blue with white. Intermixing shades of khaki or sand will keep things grounded and splashes of red here and there add fun and pizzazz. Contrasting piping on upholstery and pillows is authentically nautical whether you choose piping in red, white, blue, khaki or some patterned mix of these colors. Stripped patterns are almost required for a nautical look, from wide awning stripes to narrow ticking. It’s fun to mix stripes with solids and nautical themed vintage or classic prints incorporating anchors, shells, fish, lobster and the like, but use a judicious eye and direct the eye by dropping pattern just where it is intended. Think texture as well as color: Sea grass or jute rugs, polished woods, coarse canvas fabrics, brass, glass, pewter and hemp keep surfaces and materials mixed and interesting. Furnishings, Accessories and Other Considerations When you think of a majestic schooner or shipshape Captain’s quarters, you automatically think gleaming dark woods, brass and glass, so incorporate these materials in your living room. Paneled walls create the feeling of being below deck, but if wood is too dark for your room, you can apply a whitewash or just use wood trims in small doses. Wood side tables and coffee tables stay true to the nautical theme and ship lantern-style lamps made of brass or pewter with glass hurricanes add nautical interest to the details. Choose wall art that targets your style of nautical – a magnificent oil seascape may be apropos for a traditional nautical look, or an acrylic painting of a casual beach scene may be more your style. Nautical theme shadow boxes add three-dimensional interest and you should consider using natural materials to your advantage. For example, layer sand in a shallow bowl or hurricane glass and add seashells, starfish and a candle for a tabletop accessory. Add an area rug of jute or sea grass under the coffee table for authentic texture. Shop for vintage pieces of furniture, such as small tables or wall shelves, that can be painted and distressed to fit your nautical theme and cluster a few accessories and leather-bound seafaring books on top. Old nautical charts, framed black and white photographs of lighthouses, or a collage of photos and postcards from nearby sea towns add local flavor and avoid resorting to the cookie-cutter nautical accents that can be found in any discount store.
