8 Tips for Decorating Your Children’s Playroom

By Alyssa Davis

Young children learn by playing, so what better way to nurture their developing brains than by giving them their very own playroom, a place where they can spend hours learning about the world and its eccentricities. Although the concept is relatively simple, there are many things to consider when designing your kids’ room to ensure they have an educational but safe environment. Here are a few basic guidelines to help you get started:

• Make the room accessible, convenient, and organized. Furnishings should be scaled-down to accommodate the needs of infants and toddlers. Use versatile and durable items that can be used for multiple functions, including benches and workstations. Ensure ample storage for toys that are not in use, but allow ease of access to these storage units at all times.

• Because safety is your priority, provide adequate padding for the walls, floor, and furniture, especially at the corners. Always check that there are no objects lying around which are small enough for little children to swallow. Avoid placing pointed objects inside the room.

• Decorate the walls with bright colors and interesting shapes. Children absorb everything they see, so give them a wide variety of objects and pictures to look at. Make your wall decorating a fun experience for both you and your kids by filling your room with musical notes wall art and pictures of different plants and animals. Use bright paint or wallpaper to make everything easy to see.

• Use a combination of open and closed shelves to create a cleaner look. In particular, bins, tubs, and baskets help keep the room organized. Adding a few storage benches is also a good idea since these provide extra seating in the playroom.

• With a little extra effort, you can create dance floors, stages, and puppet theaters for various activities. Help your children’s imagination develop fully by letting them perform and create their own fantasy worlds. Make sure there are plenty of comfortable seats around.

• Ensure optimal lighting within the room. This helps keep the children safe and allows them to see every detail and color of their little world. No corner of the playroom should be left in the dark.

• Maximize your limited space and resources. For example, you can create a reusable drawing spot with chalkboard paint that can be used on any wall or large cabinet. Likewise, musical notes wall art can serve as both a decoration and an educational tool.

• Place a room divider or a floating storage to divide the space into distinct sections. This setup is particularly useful for playrooms involving several children with different interests. Moreover, by splitting the room into separate areas you can give the kids more freedom for doing daily activities such as playing, studying, and napping.

Designing the playroom is similar to designing the rest of the home in that you have to consider the needs of those who will be using it most. Just focus on safety, convenience, and organization, and everything will fall into place.
