5 Great Sculptors Who Inspired Modern Wall Sculpture Art
By Alyssa Davis
Most sculptures belong in different eras like ‘modern’, Renaissance, Medieval, and Baroque. In the world of art, styles, artworks, and artists—that have been popular in the past decade or century, were typically (and somewhat ironically) considered as ‘modern’ art. While today’s art is known as ‘contemporary’, which may be known as belonging to the ‘classical’ era after some time had passed. Here are 5 of some of the renowned ‘modern’ sculptors: 1. Constantin Brancusi (1876-1957). He was a sculptor born in Romania but lived in France. In the 19th century, sculpture was refined by Brancusi as an art form. Most of his works showed the basic beauty of sculpture, which he managed to shroud with an aura of mystery. One of his masterpieces, ‘Ecorche’ (1902), was still used as model by a medical school in Bucharest. Brancusi was greatly influenced by Auguste Rodin, whose works taught him that the surface of a sculpture was created by a force from within. He used minimalist approach to represent the sculptures in the most basic forms. 2. Naum Gabo (1890-1977). He was born in Russia but later became an American sculptor. Gabo lived in Norway during World War I, where he developed the ‘stereometric method’ of sculpting. Most people considered his approach as the main influence on the wall sculpture art of today. His first sculptures were Cubist. Common materials he used were celluloid and sheet metal. Other interesting materials include glass, wire, and plastic. Gabo always aimed to create an impression of movement in his sculptures. 3. Ivan Mestrovic (1883-1962). He worked as a shepherd before he was known as a Croatian-American sculptor. Like Brancusi, Mestrovic was also influenced by Auguste Rodin when he created his big and serious works. Materials are often wood, marble, and bronze. Favorite subjects are: • Biblical scenes • Churches • Yugoslav history • Yugoslav folklore 4. Pablo Picasso (1881-1973). He started demonstrating his extraordinary talents when he was still a young painter. His abundant original paintings made him a world-renowned artist in such a short time. Picasso favored and used the medium of painting frequently, but he also dabbled in other art media like sculptures. Picasso’s paintings were influenced by sculptures created by other artists. One example, the Iberian sculpture (which came from southwestern Europe) contributed to his style in the painting titled ‘Portrait of Gertrude Stein’ (1906). Picasso’s Cubism was influenced by African sculpture. 5. Auguste Rodin (1840-1917). Rodin’s creations were visionary, which inspired some of the wall sculpture art of today. The Frenchman sculptor had always believed that the materials he used for sculpting were objects that required shaping; so that different effects would be created on the surface. He saw his sculptures as mere pieces of materials that existed in space. In 1875, Rodin went to Italy, where he was so amazed by the masterpieces of the great masters like Donatello and Michelangelo. His deep admiration was reflected on his first important sculpture titled ‘The Age of Bronze’. The art piece looked so realistic that some experts had even accused Rodin of using a living human being as a mold. Today’s metal wall sculptures are lovely and fascinating because they are based on ‘modern’ artists’ style. Someday, these great sculptors may be considered as ‘classics’ but the beauty they revealed in their masterpieces will remain concrete eternally.

Thank you for this expertly crafted, enlightening intel! I think many people will be surprised to see Picasso on the list. I've always wondered what would have happened if Modigliani had chosen to continue with sculpture, instead of turning to two-dimensional art when dust from stonework started to affect his health. While his paintings are, of course, exceptional in the history of art, I've always been impressed by his sculptures - transcending the primitive style which inspired them, looking almost like aliens, the two busts I've seen photos of are even more striking than his paintings. But then again, I don't know much about sculpture.
