3 Painting Techniques That Add Wall Texture
By Alisa Davis
If you have a small room in your home and you want to make it feel bigger, there are several painting techniques that will make the room feel larger and while adding visual interest to the walls. Simply adding a couple of coats of fresh paint to the wall can brighten up a room, but techniques like rag rolling, color washing and sponge painting add depth and texture. When you use any of these techniques, you will first add a solid coat of paint to your walls, and then you will use a glaze or washing technique over your base layer of paint. Glazes are oil based, but they still wash up with soap and water. They will keep the paint wet longer to give you time to work your texture into the wall. Washes are made by adding water to the paint, and they tend to dry very quickly. You will want to prepare your walls before you start to paint by wiping them with a bleach and water mixture. After the walls have thoroughly dried, you will want to add a coat of primer to the walls. Adding primer ensures that your paint color will apply evenly and stay true. Before adding your glaze or washes to the wall you may want to try your technique out on a sample board until you are comfortable with it. Color Washing If you want to create a soft, cloud like feel to your walls, color washing is an excellent choice for a wall finish. This application is great is a baby’s room or anywhere where you want a subtle effect on the wall. To begin, paint your walls with your base color and let it dry. Then add a thin coat of glaze in either a complimentary or contrasting color. As you apply the glaze make sure that you put it on in a random, crisscross pattern. This will help keep any application lines from showing. Then you can go back in with a damp rag and dab to soften any remaining line marks. Rag Rolling Rag rolling creates the effect of crinkled fabric or parchment with light and dark textured colors on the walls, and it gives the walls a three dimensional look. First apply your base coat and let it dry. Then decide whether to rag or rag off the glaze. To rag on the glaze, dip your rag into the glaze and stamp it on the wall in random patterns. To rag off the glaze, roll a coat of glaze onto your wall, and then dab it with a damp, crumpled rag, removing bits of glaze to create a textured effect on your wall. Sponging To sponge paint a wall, you will use a natural sea sponge and create a porous look on your walls. You can use several colors for this process and create a lot of texture on your wall. To get this look paint the wall with your base color and let it dry. Then use your sea sponge to dab on your next color. Make sure to add just a small amount of paint to the sponge to keep the effect light. If you are adding additional layers of color, make sure that each layer of paint completely dries before applying the next layer. Wow. I had no idea painting walls was this complex. I was actually planning to pick up a roller at Home Depot and do some painting myself but I'll just call in the pros to get the texture and everything else right.
